Distinguished and Famous people from Culburra

🏆 Tyler Wright

Tyler Wright grew up in a surfing family at Culburra Beach, with siblings and parents who shared a passion for the ocean. Family trips along the coast took the children to junior competitions, and at fourteen she won the 2008 Beachley Classic at Manly, becoming the youngest winner of a Championship Tour event. Her later career included two world titles and selection for the Paris Olympics. Culburra’s waves and family surfing culture were the everyday beginnings behind a career played out on far more distant breaks.

🏅 Owen Wright

Owen Wright grew up surfing Culburra’s beach and point breaks with his siblings. Born in Nowra, he developed an international career that included a remarkable recovery after a serious injury in Hawaii in 2015. At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, he won bronze in the inaugural Olympic surfing competition. The achievement gave Culburra another reason to celebrate a family already familiar in the sport. His connection is the childhood surfing community that helped form him, alongside the later successes recorded far from home.
